Number of medical uses of Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) has been increased due to the recent high demands of medical use of radiations. The summary of such research works was described in the review article on medical application of Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System PHITS published in Radiological Physics and Technology in 2021. There was a request from the editorial board of Japan Society of Medical Physics (JSMP) for writing an introductory article of this article in their internal journal. The research works on medical applications described in the review article, useful functions for medical application in PHITS, and newly opened user forum of PHITS have been introduced.

This book begins with "What is Radiation Physics", and consists of 12 chapters, including introductory special relativity, introductory quantum theory, structures of atoms and nuclei, radiations, radioactivity, interactions between radiation and matter, accelerators, radiation dose and so on.

Accuracy check of Monte Carlo simulation in particle therapy using gel dosimeters

Gel dosimeters are gelated aqueous solutions of radiosensitive substances and useful tools to visualize three-dimensional dose distribution of radiations. A study which uses gel dosimeters to quantify the dose distribution in biological samples is explained. In this study, the measured distribution was compared with the simulation result of PHITS to check the accuracy of Monte Carlo simulation in particle therapy situations. The comparison shows that the measured complex distal edge structure of the dose distribution reflecting the particle transport in inhomogeneous biological sample was reproduced by simulation with a precision of 2 mm difference. The result also shows that gel dosimeters are powerful tools to visualize three-dimensional dose distribution and have potential to be used for various purposes such as quality assurance of treatment beams as well as accuracy check of simulations.

Medical applications of the PHITS code, 3; User assistance program for medical physics computation

An application of Particle and Heavy Ion Transport Code System; PHITS, for medical physics is to simulate treatment planning of radiation therapy. Treatment planning simulation is conducted by constructing patient geometry from patient CT data, calculating radiation transport of external beam, and deducing dose distribution inside patient body. However, it is not easy to extract information such as patient location and CT value distribution from patient CT data or to construct complex accelerator geometry in PHITS format. Therefore, we developed two user assistance programs, DICOM2PHITS and PSFC4PHITS. DICOM2PHITS is a program to construct the voxel PHITS simulation geometry from patient CT DICOM image data. PSFC4PHITS is a program to convert the IAEA phase-space file data to PHITS format to be used as simulation source of PHITS. We explain these two programs by showing some applications in this article.

PHITS is a general purpose Monte Carlo particle transport simulation code developed through the collaboration of several institutes mainly in Japan. It can analyze the motion of nearly all radiations over wide energy ranges in 3-dimensional matters. It has been used for various applications including medical physics. This paper reviews the recent improvements of the code, such as implementation of EGS5, new photo-nuclear reaction model, and sumtally function. The review of the biological dose estimation method developed on the basis of the microdosimetric function implemented in PHITS is also given.

Medical application of the PHITS code, 2; Acceleration by parallel computing

Time-consuming Monte Carlo dose calculation becomes feasible owing to the development of computer technology. However, the recent development is due to emergence of the multi-core high performance computers. Therefore, parallel computing becomes a key to achieve good performance of software programs. A Monte Carlo simulation code PHITS contains two parallel computing functions, the distributed-memory parallelization using protocols of MPI and the shared-memory parallelization using OpenMP directives. Users can choose the two functions according to their needs. This paper gives the explanation of the two functions with their advantages and disadvantages. Some test applications are also provided to show their performance using a typical multi-core high performance workstation.

This textbook is prepared for a lecture of the reactor physics in Nuclear Professional School of The University of Tokyo. In Chapter 1, the characteristics of nucleus and the interaction between nucleus and neutron were described. In Chapter 2, the fission reaction, its chain reaction and a concept on criticality were described. Chapter 3 described about the fundamental study on a diffusion equation to treat the neutron spatial distributions in a substance. In Chapter 4, the application of a diffusion equation was shown to learn the feature of neutron distribution in a substance with homogeneous composition. Chapter 5 described the physics of neutron slowing-down in a substance and Chapter 6 investigated the neutron slowing-downed to become in thermal equilibrium state in the substance. Chapter 7 considered the effect of the practical heterogeneous composition from the homogeneous one to the criticality. The JENDL-4.0 library was referred for the nuclear reaction cross section data.
